Hand-printed textiles have been an attractive giftware.They include block and screen printing,batik,kalamkari,and
bandhani.The products range from bed-covers to sheets,dress material to
upholstery and tapestry.
This segment of the industry accounts for almost half a million strong employment
in addition to a large number of designers,
blockmaker,weavers and packers.
Farrukhabad
in Uttar Pradesh is a primary centre known for had printing.Bandhani - or tie and die style-is generally the pride
of Kuctch,Saurashtra,Rajasthan and Madras.In Tamil Nadu,Batik is an ancient craft,known to have travelled from India to
Indonesia.
In
addition ,there is vast range of other handmade textile products,used for decorations
and furnishings,a most popular is
Toran-frequently used to decorate door-post.It may be emboidered or put out with applique
work in folk motifs.
Tombai is cyindrical hanging with applique work done by hand .Kalamkari is generally seen in wall hangings which depict
mythological scenes.Kalamkari
craftsmen use wax for hand-printing. Chakla is an embroidered wall hangings,mostly with
mirror work,showing folk motifts.Phulkari is a decorative embroidered cloth in close daming stiches done with strands of
untwisted
silk,making flowery designs.It is a speciality of Punjab.It is also found in certain parts of Rajasthan and Himachal
Pradesh.Godiposh are decorative bed spreads which are sometimes quilted.
Another form is Gabba,a floor covering crafted by hand embroidery or aplique work on a base of woven wool,felt
or Jute.
Commonly known as Namdas,they are also floor covering with
felted woollen surface,with or without embroidery.They are
found in different
sizes and shapes.
Some of the best known embroidery varieties is Kasida of Kashmir mostly done on shawls. Extremely delicate,elfin-like,
mostly in plain spotless white,is the chikan embroidery of Uttar Pradesh.Innumerable styles are found in tribal embroidery,
with striking effects both on silk and cotton,often embellished with mirrors shells,beads
and metallic pieces.Fine designs are
worked in applique,where the
edges are decorated with tassels and inexpensive jewellery.
Some of the best
known Indian emroidery,and probably the oldest,is gold and silver Zari work.While Zardozi is heavy and
elaborate,Kamdani is lighter and simpler.The material used is thread of gold or Silver besides thin
strips of metal known as
Badia or Gota.There are large number of buyers for Zari and Zari articles in USA,UK,JAPAN,SAUDI
ARABIA AND
GERMANY.
Embroidery is also done on leather,felt and velvet-mostly
on foot-wear,headgear and handbags.
